Tameka's Story
Dr. Tameka Vaught Williams is a dynamic and accomplished professional with over 17 years of experience in the criminal and juvenile legal systems, project management, leadership coaching, and higher education. As the Director of Staff Investment and Curiosity at Justice System Partners (JSP), Tameka plays a pivotal role in operationalizing the organization's vision and creating a vibrant learning environment. She is dedicated to fostering innovation, growth, and high-quality work among the staff, and she excels at cultivating cross-team relationships through comprehensive training and coaching initiatives.
Before her current role at JSP, Tameka provided training and technical assistance to criminal justice organizations undergoing system change, managed multiple projects, and led diverse teams to ensure timely project delivery. Her career began as an adult probation officer and juvenile court counselor, where she provided case management and oversight to court-involved adults and youth. She then transitioned to quality assurance in public safety, implementing and evaluating community and evidence-based programs.
Tameka's academic journey includes a tenure at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) as a Clinical Assistant Professor. There, she taught criminal justice courses, directed student support, and developed future criminal justice leaders. Her "real world" perspective, drawn from her extensive leadership and practitioner experience, enriched her teaching and curriculum development efforts.
In addition to her professional and academic roles, Tameka is an entrepreneur with experience running businesses ranging from non-profits to e-commerce. She founded J.E.W.E.L.S., a non-profit organization dedicated to developing the next generation of women leaders in criminal and social justice fields.




Tameka is a two-time alumna of NCCU, holding dual bachelor’s degrees in Political Science and Criminal Justice, a Master of Science in Criminal Justice, and a Ph.D. in Leadership Studies from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. Her written work and research interests focus on student professional development, correctional managers’ leadership development, the role of barbershops and beauty salons as community anchors, the criminalization of minority youth, and the barriers to leadership for Black women in the workplace.
